How-to Guide: Fur

If you have been on PinterestFacebook or even just outside of your house lately, you are probably well aware that the fur vest has been a huge trend throughout this fall/winter season. And if you are anything like myself, you have been coveting one as well.

The problem is, seeing these trends look fabulous on someone else is one thing, but what I (and I think all of you ladies as well) want to know is...ok, that is all fine and dandy but how would this work on ME?

I am a pear shape. There, I said it. I have a love/hate relationship with this fact, but I have (somewhat) come to terms with it. This means that my lower half is significantly larger than my upper body (think of a pear) and I carry most of my weight below my waist. I have learned over the years that the looks that work best for me are ones that highlight my tiny waist.

Now, that is why this trend scared me. A lot. Love the look, but worried that I would look like a round hairball that came out of a Garfield sized cat's throat. (Visualize this please, it ain't pretty!) This trend did all the wrong things for me, it added bulk to the last place that I needed it.

Did this stop me from lusting over a fur vest? Of course not. Did I buy one? Of course not. What I DID do was find an alternative that actually worked for my body shape.

Ladies, meet the fur scarf. This beauty gives the look of the fur vest without adding the volume in all the wrong places. I love this take on this trend because not only is it a wearable version for pear shapes, but for someone like myself who gets the chills when the house is below 24 degrees Celsius, the fur at the neck help keep you toasty no matter where you are. I got this fur scarf at RW&CO on a recent shopping trip with my mom (more to come on what else I picked up there later on so stay tuned!)

A few pics of how I did this trend. Since the fur scarf was such a statement piece I paired it with a simple cotton long sleeved tee, some leggings with leather like detail, kick ass over the knee black boots and simple gold/pearl combination jewelery.

If you are lucky enough to not be pear shaped and want to give the vest style a try, here is one I quite enjoy from Club Monaco.

***I would also like to add that when I talk fur, I clearly am talking faux! Real fur is luscious and luxurious, but I don't support harming animals in any way, shape or form. No critters will ever be harmed in the making of my closet or blog :)

What are some trends that you have altered to fit your body shape?
What is your take on the fur trend?

Breaking out of your comfort zone, slowly but surely

As devoted as I am to fashion, and as appreciative as I am to street styles on other people, I tend to find myself in a rut. A fashionable rut, but a rut nonetheless. My problem isn't that I don't buy new things (I do a lot of that), my problem is my colour palette. I tend to stick to the same tried and true colours. When I like a colour, I will quite literally wear it out. I like pinks, beiges, whites and the like, but I need to open up my mind (and closet) and realize that there ARE other colours out there as well.

I took a step in the right direction yesterday when I stopped by the local Dynamite at Place d'Orleans and bought a ridiculously well priced electric blue dress. I believe the key to testing out new colours, or pushing your boundaries in any way, lies in doing it gradually. If you have the same problem that I have, I would not recommend buying a highlighter yellow dress in a new trendy style that you have never worn before. Just dip your feet in the water, don't drown just! Try a new colour in a classic shape, so its not so overwhelming and you can gradually start incorporating new colours into your wardrobe.  Get used to the idea of colour in shapes that you know work for your body, and then you can move up to more edgy things.

This dress is a classic sheath shape, but modernized with cut out details at the waist and of course, the colour. It was a steal at only 25$ and the perfect choice for the Shopify party last night.

The necklace is also from Dynamite and new earrings from Aldo

With fellow fashion blogger  Kate Forrest

Also in the spirit of embracing new ideas, I tried out this hair bow that I had seen on my addiction, Pinterest. Didn't quite turn out like the picture on Pinterest, but hey I tried and that's the most important part!

I encourage you all to take a small step forward and embrace a new colour, pattern, texture or style that you haven't yet dared to wear. I know if I can do it, you can too!

What are your thoughts? What have you been too scared to try?

The notorious "Sock Bun" : Curly haired girl rant

Alright, so if you have been on Pinterest, or are a university/college student, or have access to Youtube, you have more than likely heard of this infamous "sock bun". Even celebrities like Kim Kardashian have embraced the sock bun, as you can see.

In the small chance that you haven't, here it is. It is a bun (in your hair) made by a sock. Yes, those things you use on your feet, socks. Grab a (clean) sock and a pair of scissors and give it a whirl.

What this consists of is cutting the toe end of the sock off and somehow making a crunchie-like apparatus with said sock, pulling it over your ponytail, then wrapping your hair around it thus creating the perfect bun. Sounds easy enough, right?

If you have any form of curly hair, IT IS NOT! I have been baffled with the sock bun conundrum for months. I try and I try, I waste sock upon sock, to no avail. My sock bun consistently looks like, well crap. Where is this perfect bun they speak of?! All I seem to accomplish is a knot in my hair, along with the sock (figure that one out) and an hour of wasted time. I have come to the conclusion that the sock bun is another evil invention reserved solely for the straight haired girls. How convenient that all of the tutorials on are, yes you guessed it, STRAIGHT HAIRED GIRLS. One of my personal missions in life is to raise awareness about society's ignorance to curly haired girls. Yes we are people too, and yes we want all the same opportunities/privileges given to the lucky straight haired girls.

So, please, I beg of you, if you have curly/wavy difficult hair and you have mastered the sock bun, please, PLEASE share your secrets with me. I won't tell anyone, I promise, and you would actually be doing society a favour by not allowing them to further endure the bird's nest upon my head that is my attempt at a "sock bun". If someone could enlighten me about the mystery behind curly hair vs. sock bun it would be greatly appreciated!
